Ibrahim Zylstra - July 15, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Ibrahim Zylstra, an 18-year-old recent graduate of Brantford Collegiate Institute (BCI), a star football and rugby player recruited to play for the Queen's University football team.
Ibrahim has dedicated much time to his studies, graduating from Grade 12 with an 85 per cent average, however he is also very dedicated to sports. His primary passion is football – playing for the BCI team from 1999 to 2004, winning five consecutive Brant County titles, and captaining the team three of those seasons.
He was nominated four times for the team's most valuable player award, and won the offensive MVP in both 2003 and 2004.
Ibrahim also played football with the Bisons. They finished second in all of Ontario in 1999. He was nominated MVP that season and won the most improved player in 2000. He was also nominated best quarterback in the Ontario Varsity Football League twice.
School rugby was also on the agenda for this busy athlete. Ibrahim helped his team win five consecutive Brant County and CWOSSA titles from 1999 to 2004. The team won three Ontario titles (from 1999 to 2002) and finished third in OFSAA in 2004.
Ibrahim was also involved with the following accomplishments by the BCI rugby team: four-time London Cup winners (1999 - 2003); winners of the Red Hot Tournament (2004), the Cherry Blossoms Tournament (Washington D.C. 2004), and the Saltfleet Invitational Tournament from 2000 to 2004.
Badminton saw Ibrahim with one Brant County title (2000) and two silver medals in 2001 and 2002. With one CWOSSA championship in 2000 and a third-place finish in 2001, this dynamic athlete who has been playing badminton for seven years, has proven his general sports aptitude
In addition to eight years of playing hockey, participating in many league and provincial tournaments, Ibrahim has participated in baseball, track and field, ultimate Frisbee, and basketball.
Ibrahim's volunteer time has been spent with the youth in his church, helping the disabled bowl, participating in the Relay for Life - a fundraiser for cancer research - and being a stellar community person.
