Jacob Shipman - April 28, 2005
Jacob Shipman is a grade five student from St. Patrick's School who loves playing his favourite sport basketball, and is honing his skills so that one day he can make his dream come true by becoming a professional basketball player.
Jacob has been playing CYO house league for five years and in the select league for three, playing 'post' in the Atom division. This year, he played in the Ontario Basketball Association's Provincial Championships, with his team ranked fifth overall. He won all three Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competitions, first at St. Patrick's School, then in Brantford, and followed up in the Region One (Cambridge, Paris, Brantford), in the 10-year-old division.
Jacob is looking forward to attending the Olympia Basketball Camp this summer, and hopes to play on his school's basketball team next year. He has been involved as a volunteer with CYO for the past two years, as a scorekeeper/timer.
Football is another of Jacob's passions, and he's been excelling at the sport since he started two seasons ago. Currently playing in the Brantford Youth Flag Football league, he's already achieved records to beat. Jacob has the longest punt in the Punt, Pass, Kick 10-and-under competition for the 2004 season, and in 2003, earned the longest kick title (25 yards) in the same competition.
Jacob's football team was crowned champions of their Level 2 Division in 2004, and finished second in the Level 1 Division in 2003. This season he's excited to begin playing tackle football with the Brantford and District Football Club (Bison's).
Jacob is also a fan of soccer and has been playing in the Brantford Youth Soccer house league for five years. Last year, his team finished second overall in the under-11 boys division. In 2004, Jacob helped as a referee for the league, overseeing the 6, 7, and 8-year-old's mini-soccer games and plans to continue refereeing this summer.
Jacob takes pride in his community, and has raised money for the past two years in the Brantford Classic Run and last year for the Alzheimer Society of Brant in their Walk of Memories. He is looking forward to playing in Brantford's 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament this summer, with all proceeds going to Community Living Brant. Jacob also enjoys playing tennis, swimming, fishing, golf, pick-up hockey, and running cross-country.
At 11 years old, Jacob is a boy of many talents - he is also learning to play the acoustic and electric guitars and has a talent for drawing cartoons and other fun characters. He is a dedicated student who maintains a B+ average and his favourite subjects are art and gym.
Jacob's future goals are to one day attend either Carolina University or Illinois State to study fine arts or music and of course, play basketball.
Congratulations Jacob, and good luck! |
