Jennifer Kirby - September 23, 2004
This week's TCO Athlete of the Week is Jennifer Kirby.
TCO Athlete of the Week Jennifer Kirby can usually be found at the Brantford Golf & Country Club after school, working on her game.
A student at St. George German School, 13 year-old Jennifer has been playing golf for five years. This eighth-grader has had an excellent season thus far, winning six tournaments, including the Canadian Junior Golf Association Championship in Toronto. Jennifer also captured three provincial championship titles in 2004, among them the Golf Association of Ontario Junior championships held in Goderich, and the BMO Future Links in Listowel. This year she was also selected to play for Team Ontario in the Ontario Cup.
When she's not on the links Jennifer can often be found on the basketball court. She has been playing for six years. In 2004 she was a member of the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) Falcons Major bantam AAA team, which captured the Ontario Championship title. With an impressive record of 70 wins and 4 losses, the Falcons went on to compete at the Eastern Canadian Finals in Moncton, New Brunswick, where they were runner-up. This winter, when the golf season is on hiatus, Jennifer plans on helping coach and referee CYO Minor Girls Basketball.
At school Jennifer is active on several teams, including basketball, badminton, track & field, cross country, and volleyball. Jennifer's success, commitment and dedication are not limited to athletic pursuits. She consistently maintains and A+ average in her classes. She also studies piano, and hopes to achieve her Grade 8 certification- earning her a secondary school credit in music- before entering high school at St. John's College next year.
Sport is an essential part of Jennifer's life. She loves the interaction with her teammates in basketball, and thrives on the pressure of golf, and its many rewards and disappointments. Her long-term goal is to combine her academic and athletic talents to earn a scholarship to a university in the United States where she hopes to qualify to play on the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) golf circuit.
Congratulations Jennifer, and good luck! |
