Joanne Fernandez - April 12, 2007
Joanne Fernandez is a seventeen-year-old grade 12 student from St. John’s College who is involved in soccer, basketball and volleyball. In 2004 she won MVP awards for both basketball and volleyball.
For the past 12 years she has been actively involved in CYO basketball, Brantford Inter City soccer, and the Mount Hamilton Youth Soccer League. She has also been a member of several basketball, soccer and volleyball teams at St. John’s and previously at St. Leo’s school.
Joanne was part of the St. John’s senior girls basketball team until she injured her knee earlier this season and was sidelined. She recently assumed the role as manager of the senior girls volleyball team and will take on the same role for the girls soccer team. Last year she participated at the Mount Hamilton under 18 girls rep soccer team but is unable to participate this year due to her injury.
Joanne is a member of her school’s Student Council Executive as the Store Manager/Treasurer. She was a member of the semi-formal committee and is part of the Science Tutorial Assistance Program, where senior students assist younger science students to overcome academic challenges.
For the past four years, she has been a basketball coach for CYO; she helped coach girl’s house league basketball, and was a counselor at several North Park summer basketball camps.
In grade 11, she achieved an average of 95%, and last semester her average was 91%. She has been on the Honour Role since grade nine and is working hard to increase her average this semester, before heading off to university in the fall.
Joanne hopes to attend either Waterloo or McMaster University and pursue a career in chemical engineering. She hopes to return to sports after surgery on her knee, but until then, she will continue to help others.
Congratulations Joanne and good luck! |
