Kaitlyn Mitchell - September 2, 2010
Kaitlyn Mitchell is a fifteen year old grade 11 student from St. John’s College who is actively involved in swimming and soccer, and has also participated in gymnastics, floor hockey, t-ball and basketball. She has been a member of the Brantford Aquatic Club (BAC) and the Brantford Intercity Soccer Club (BICS) since she was ten.
Over the years Kaitlyn has won numerous awards for swimming including the BAC 2007 Gordon E. Prime Award, which is awarded to the junior swimmer chosen by the coaches who has shown the most dedication, perseverance and enthusiasm; the 2008 Lead Award for leadership, encouragement and dedication in and out of the pool; the 2009 Top Competitive Time Off Award and the BAC Optimist Award for perseverance in the competitive swim program. She was also a member of the Ontario Summer Games team in 2008.
This season Kaitlyn placed in the top 8 in 5 of her events at the Western Region Long Course Championships including 1st in 400 Free, 3rd in 800 Free and 3rd in 100 Free. She also participated in the Ontario Open Water Championships in July and placed 3rd in 3 km over 15 year old girl category. Although Kaitlyn came up short in meeting her time standards goal this season, she is confident that her continued perseverance and hard work in the pool will lead to future success in the water.
Kaitlyn’s second passion is soccer; she is currently a member of the Brantford Intercity U16 Elite Girls Soccer Team and has been a member of the team for the past 6 seasons. The team is currently ranked 13th in the province and is hoping to make it to the OYSL division this season.
Her team has experienced many successes in the past six years including the U13 Brantford Soccer Classic Champions, 2008 and 2009 Brockport International Soccer Champions, the South Region U15 Elite League Cup Champions in 2009 and the U14 Premiere Division winners in 2008. Her team has also won three tournaments this season in Oshawa, St. Thomas and Mississauga.
She was a member of the Senior Girls Cross Country team that won the city championships, and also won the 2008 Female Athlete of the Year for Resurrection School. She was a member of the SJC midget volleyball team that won the city championships in 2008/09, and was a member of the SJC varsity soccer team in grade 9, and represented her school in swimming at OFSSA in grade 10.
She has also participated in the Dare to Tri- Triathlon hosted at Ancaster high school for the past two years. Kaitlyn has limited her participation in high school athletics this past year since she has a tough training schedule with swim practices, soccer practices, swim meets and an indoor soccer league.
Kaitlyn has enjoyed volunteering in the community, and has helped out at the BICS Classic Tournament, the United Way Warehouse Sale, the United Way / H & H Paintball tournament; timing at BAC novice swim meets and volunteered as a councillor at Averyhill Farms, to earn over 100 community service hours. She has also taught swim school for BAC and has been referring youth soccer.
She is a dedicated and hardworking honor roll student who maintains an A average. In the future, Kaitlyn hopes to continue her studies at the university level, work with children or youth in some capacity and participate in either swimming or soccer at the varsity level.
Kaitlyn would like to thank her current swim coach Tom Langridge for his support over the past season, and her soccer coach, Clive Perry for setting a great example on the field as a coach, and for sharing his skills and dedication to the sport in the pursuit of developing a great team.
Congratulations Kaitlyn and good luck.
