Kelly Ashby - June 9, 2005
Kelly Ashby is in her second year of competing on the Paris District High School's (PDHS) gymnastics team and just can't get enough of this demanding sport.
During her first year on the gymnastics team this 16-year-old grade 10 student, competed at CWOSSA placing second on beam and eighth on floor. She also competed at BCSSA placing seventh on beam and received the Coach's Award for the 2003/2004 gymnastics season.
Kelly had an excellent season again this year; she placed seventh on vault, fourth on floor and third on beam at BCSSA. At CWOSSA she had an amazing finish as the fourth place overall competitor coming in sixth on floor, fifth on vault, and third on beam. Her team finished third place at the meet, and Kelly then went on to OFSAA in 2004 and 2005. Kelly's goal next year is to go to OFSAA for gymnastics and place in the top 10 on the beam.
Volleyball is another one of Kelly's favourite sports. In 2005, her PDHS team battled their way to the top spot at the annual Pauline Johnson Collegiate & Vocational School Jr. Girls Volleyball Tournament. She has been playing the sport for two years now, and can't wait to try out for the senior girls' team next year.
This season was Kelly's first year on the PDHS cross-country team who ended up the season as the Midget Girls BCSSA Champions.
Kelly volunteers at the Optimist Youth Dances and helped at the 2004 Walk for Dog Guides in St. George. She enjoyed serving up pancakes at the Westfield Heritage Museum's Pancake Days event earlier this year, and is a member of the HOBY Alumni, a group that is dedicated to youth leadership in the community.
As a member of the St. George United Church's youth group, Kelly helped buy Christmas presents to give to elderly residents at Leisure World in Brantford this past December. Kelly also tried her hand at theatre this year, participating in her church's play production in April.
Kelly was on the Honor Roll in grade nine and this year had an incredible mid-term average of 93 per cent, and continues working hard to keep her marks above 85 per cent for finals. Academically her goal for the future is to maintain high marks in grades 11 and 12 in hopes of earning a scholarship for university so that she can study journalism or teaching. Her athletic goals are to join the university gymnastics team, and possibly the volleyball and basketball teams.
Congratulations Kelly and good luck! |
