Laura Rajnak - February 19, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Laura Rajnak, a 14-year-old Grade 8 student at Our Lady of Providence School.
Laura's preferred sport is basketball. She has been an allstar player for the past six years with the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). For the past two years, Laura has been a member of the tri-county regional team. In 2002, she was instrumental in helping her team achieve a gold medal at the Ontario Summer Games.
In 2003, this outstanding athlete was also a team member of the tri-county regional when they won gold again, and were also named the bantam provincial team. Laura was a valued contributor to the team and won the MVP award.
Laura also participated on the CYO bantam allstar team - they won silver at the Ontario Championships in 2002, where they were presented with the hustle award.
During the current 2004 season, Laura's CYO major bantam AAA team has won three tournaments to date, taking home two gold and one silver.
As a member of her school track and field team, Laura was the pentathlon champion in 2003, the junior city champion in 2002 and arrived first place in the cross-country division in 2002.
Laura also enjoys a number of other sports: volleyball, soccer, flag football (in 2003, she was awarded most improved player), and snowblading. She has an 85% average, with math and physical education as her favourite subjects.
Laura volunteers her spare time as a referee for the CYO and will be attending St. John's College next year.
