Laura Shoots - August 12, 2004
This week's TCO Athlete of the Week, Laura Shoots, is a student whose sporting pursuits are complemented by successes in the classroom, and exemplary leadership in the community at large.
A recent graduate of North Park Collegiate, Laura was co-captain of the school's girls' soccer team for the past three years and in Grade 12 was named MVP. Throughout her high school years Laura also played volleyball. She was captain and MVP of her team in Grade 10. She also captained the school's tennis and ice hockey teams, and was the tennis team's Most Valuable Player in Grade 12. Laura played badminton for the Trojans for three years, and in Grade 12 was given the honour of being named Most Improved Player.
Outside of school Laura's penchant for sport continues. She has played for several years in the Brantford Intercity Soccer Club. She was the leading scorer for her team in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons. Laura also participates in the Brant Youth Volleyball Club, and in the past has been a member of the Brantford Girls Hockey Association.
Laura's athletic pursuits have earned her a host of accolades, including the Burleigh Henry Memorial Award (November 2003), North Park Female Athlete of the Year (2003), and the Bison's Alumni Gary Snowden Memorial Award (2001).
During her final year at North Park Collegiate Laura was the school's Girls Athletic Society President. She also spent a term as president of OSAID, Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving, and volunteers regularly at her church, as well as for various charitable events.
Laura recently won a special award at North Park Collegiate for her outstanding level of participation in school sports and clubs. On the points system used to track participation, Laura was the overall top earner. Meanwhile she earned an average of over 91% in her final year of school, graduating second in her class and earning the General Proficiency Award.
This September Laura begins post-secondary education at McMaster University where she plans to study Health Sciences.
