Marc Bijman - February 17, 2005
Marc Bijman is a fine example of a well-rounded athlete, whose passion for sport is complemented by a community-minded outlook, and strong academic results.
Marc is a grade nine student at St. John's College where he and his teammates from the Midget Boys Basketball team have been riding high on an unbeaten streak this season. Marc is a shooting guard for this impressive Green Eagles squad.
Outside of school, Marc has been playing basketball for six seasons with the CYO league (Catholic Youth Organization). In 2003/2004 Marc's team experienced a major highlight, finishing in fourth place in the provincials. Last year he was awarded the Phil Cook Award, presented annually to a player who shows dedication to sport, volunteering, and sportsmanship.
Marc's athletic prowess is not limited to the basketball court. He has played competitive soccer for six years with the Brantford Inter-City Soccer Club. He is a two-time winner of the Coaches' Choice MVP Award, and belonged to the top team in his division in 2002. In addition to being a member of many tournament-winning teams, Marc was selected to play for the Hamilton District team in 2003.
Football is also on the roster of sports played by Marc Bijman. He played recreational football for the past seven years. He and his teammates have reached the finals five times, winning three of the titles. His skills as a player have earned him several Punt, Pass & Kick awards.
Prior to starting high school, Marc played on several school teams, including soccer, volleyball, and basketball. In his eighth grade year his school captured the city championship titles in all three sports. In elementary school Marc also competed in track & field, and he was selected Junior Athlete of the Year in 2002.
In his spare time, Marc referees basketball and soccer. He has earned his Level Four as a referee. He also volunteers as a coach for his sister's CYO basketball team.
Marc is a strong student, who maintains an 80% average. After high school he plans to continue his education at the university level.
