Matt Stephenson - November 3, 2005
Matt Stephenson is a dedicated and hard working athlete who has been a member of the Brantford Aquatic Club for the past eight years. He has been swimming competitively for five years and spends at least 20 hours a week training in the pool.
Matt was thrilled to become a National champion in the 100-metre breaststroke, in the 15-year-old boys division, at the championships held in Winnipeg, this past July. In February 2005, he won the Provincial championship in the 200-metre breaststroke in the 14-year-old-boys division.
Matt also won several provincial medals and top eight provincial records in various events, over the past three years. He received the Gordon E. Prime award for the 2003/2004 swim season presented to the junior swimmer who takes no short cuts, shows dedication, perseverance, and enthusiasm.
Before Matt started swimming competitively, he played on a house league hockey team that won a provincial championship and played house league soccer for many years.
During his spare time, Matt teaches swimming lessons at the Brantford Aquatic Club's swim school program, helps out at several novice swim meets and participated in the annual 'Relay for Life.'
Matt is an excellent student currently in grade 10 at Brantford Collegiate Institute; in grade nine he was on the honor role and earned highest-mark awards in French, science, geography, and business. He finished the year with six subject awards for excellence in French, science, geography, business, math, and physical education, and is involved in the Laurier program at BCI.
Matt's goals for the future include earning a university scholarship, becoming a doctor, and qualifying for the national swim team. If his accomplishments to date are any indication, he will certainly reach his goals.
Congratulations Matt, and good luck! |
