Michelle Chapin - August 5, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Michelle Chapin, an 18-year-old who will be attending the University of Western Ontario in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
Michelle has recently graduated, with an 85 per cent grade average, from Pauline Johnson Collegiate where she was a member of the gymnastics team for four years with terrific results. She competed at OFSAA in 2002 and 2003, winning gold medals on the balance beam. At CWOSSA, she received two gold medals in both 2002 and 2003 for her performance on the floor and on the balance beam.
At Pauline Johnsons athletic banquet held in 2004, Michelle received accolades for her outstanding performance by being recognized as the MVP for the gymnastics team. This athlete has matured as a leader and the younger team members began looking to her for guidance and considered her a coach.
Before becoming involved in gymnastics for her high school team, Michelle was a member of Dance Step Studios competitive dance team, where she performed jazz, tap, ballet, lyrical, modern, hip hop, and theatrical dance. Here she completed from 1994 to 2000 and received numerous medals and ribbons for her performance in solos, duets, trios, and group routines.
Michelles leisure time has been spent volunteer coaching and choreographing dance, and coaching gymnastics to four- to nine-year-olds for Brant County. In 2003, she also volunteered her time as an OFSAA official by assisting the judges at a provincial gymnastics competition by timing routines.
This well-rounded young woman has belonged to a number of school committees, and acted as a DARE positive role model, visiting elementary school students advising them to make wise choices. Michelles dream is to complete her university degree and pursue a career in the field of sports.
Congratulations Michelle and good luck! |
