Ray Balberman - September 11, 2008
Ray Balberman is a seventeen year-old graduate of North Park Collegiate who was actively involved on several school teams including curling, golf, football, rugby and baseball. He was nominated for the Bison's Alumni Athletic Scholarship for top male athlete at North Park for his academic and athletic accomplishments.
Ray’s favourite sport is curling and was skip on the North Park curling team. He also plays vice on a junior curling team that competes in the Ontario Junior Curling tour. Last season Ray's team was runner-up at the provincial championships in both Bantam Boys and Bantam Mixed Ontario Curling Association play-downs.
He has attended the Amethyst Curling Camp in Sudbury and the Trillium Curling Camp in Guelph. This summer at the Trillium camp he received a coach's award chosen from his group of 16 campers. Next summer he hopes to attend the Fϋssen Curling Camp in Germany, as one of eight Canadian curlers to travel to this international camp. In the future he hopes to be a counsellor at either the Trillium or Amethyst Curling Camp.
When he is not playing sports Ray enjoys recording music and performing with Ogres of the South Wall, a local progressive rock band in which he plays guitar and bass guitar. Ray was pleased to play for a good cause at A Song for Guatemala in August and is looking forward to playing in future benefit concerts. He also participated in the North Park Wind Ensemble and Stage Band throughout high school.
Ray graduated high school with an 84% average and is currently attending the University of Western Ontario taking kinesiology. He hopes to study all aspects of sport, especially sports psychology and intends to use his education to help Canadian athletes achieve success on the international stage. Ray will also be taking courses leading towards a possible career in journalistic writing at Western.
