Saleena Wedderburn - June 3, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Saleena Wedderburn, a 12-year-old Grade 6 student at Branlyn Community School. She is a member of the CYO basketball team and also a member of the Brantford Track and Field Club.
Saleena helped her team recently win a gold medal at the 2004 atom division one provincial basketball championship. Through Saleena's athletic ability, she was able to make 9 out of 10 free throws; for her contribution to the team, she was named the MVP of the tournament
In 2002, Saleena's team won the novice division one provincial basketball championship, and she was tied for the MVP award for the tournament. Saleena is a talented basketball player and a strong figure among the atom girls basketball players in Ontario.
Saleena is also a promising sprinter; she has won the provincial 100m, 200m and long jump. She holds the 100m and 200m junior record in Brant County. She also holds the 200m tyke record at the annual Markham track meet. Last year, Saleena set her personal best for the 100m at 12.97 and 28.11 in the 200m. On May 8, 2004, she won the 100m and 200m at the Burlington track meet.
Saleena's biggest athletic achievement was placing second in the 200m at the Hershey North America track meet in Pennsylvania, USA. Among the athletes from seven US states and Ontario, she posted the fastest time in the 200m. She has been asked to join the four fastest atom sprinters in Ontario to represent Canada at the North American track meet this season.
