Shane Summerhays - October 17, 2002
The Tournament Capital of Ontario "Athlete of the Week" is Shane Summerhays a 16 year-old, grade 12 student from North Park Collegiate who is a member of the Brantford Youth Boxing Club where he trains with coach Bill Williams three days a week.
As most sports enthusiasts in Brantford and area would already have gathered, Shane comes by his talent honestly; his father Terry and two uncles (Gary and John) were all champions and Shane is poised to follow in their substantial footsteps. Currently a middleweight (160 lb. weight class), Shane has fought all over Ontario and represented the province in St. John, New Brunswick. He was a gold medallist in the Summerhays tournament and the Brampton Cup and once won five fights in a row. He has also scored two first round TKO's.
A well rounded athlete, before concentrating on boxing Shane was active in football and rugby, and won a league championship in his final year of hockey.
"Sugar Shane" (as he was nicknamed in New Brunswick) is currently preparing for the Ontario Games in Barrie later this month and hopes to qualify for Nationals after that. Shane's focus on boxing has not adversely affected his academics, as he is still able to maintain close to an 80 average in his math and science courses. Shane still finds time to hold down a part-time job.
Congratulations Shane. |
