Sharon Welsby - March 7, 2002
The Tournament Capital of Ontario "Athlete of the Week" is Sharon Welsby a 17 year-old grade 12 student from B.C.I. who participates in both indoor and outdoor soccer. Sharon began playing soccer at the age of 4 with the Brantford Recreational Soccer League, at age 7 she joined the Brantford Youth Soccer League, then at age 10 she joined the Brantford Minor Indoor Soccer League, and since then has played for 30 different teams. She has been involved with house league, select and competitive teams over the years and is currently playing for the Brantford Blazers open women's competitive team and house league at Soccer World in Hamilton. Sharon was head coach for a team of 7 to 9 year-olds who won their championships last season and this year is coaching a team of 10 to 12 year-olds. Sharon is a class 3 referee and is currently studying for her class 2 referee status. She has also played other sports over the years including softball, volleyball, badminton, gymnastics, dance and is currently a member of the Brant Memorial Concert Band. Sharon is an honour role student with an average of 94%, she is currently involved in a co-op program at the Brant Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic and next year hopes to further her education by taking Kinesiology at the University of Guelph.
