Sydney Whelan - April 8, 2010
Sydney Whelan is a seventeen year-old grade 12 student from St. John’s College who has been involved in a variety of sports over the years and is currently a member of both the SJC Green Eagles basketball and rugby teams.
She was a member of the 2009 / 2010 SJC senior girls basketball team who won a gold medal at the OFSSAA Championships and her team won the 2009 Jimmy Wilkes Memorial Team of the Year award at the Brantford Sports Council awards banquet.
Sydney has participated in basketball for 13 years and rugby for 4 years. In grade 10 she was captain of the junior girls team and was awarded MVP of her rugby team. In grade 12 she was again named captain of the senior team. She played basketball for CYO and won two OBA championships, one in 2001 and again in 2003.
Sydney is a member of the SJC Athletic Society and the Campus Ministry; she was a grade 9 student mentor and she received the Eagle award.
Sydney is a dedicated and hard working honor role student who maintains an 86% average. She plans to further her education at university pursuing a career in law and hopes to continue playing rugby at the varsity level.
